FAQ
Do I have to be in good shape to complete this program since it involves climbing Africa's tallest mountain?
No. Basic fitness is enough, although increased fitness will add to your enjoyment and to the likelihood of reaching the summit.
Very soon after being accepted onto the seminar, you will receive a training schedule that will make sure you are ready for the challenges. We will also attempt to pair SYATT participants up as training buddies if they live close enough to each other.
Will I need any special climbing equipment?
No. You will need some clothing and camping items, a list of which will be sent to you once you are accepted on the program. As the climb is totally non-technical, you will not need any specialized climbing equipment.
Will I make it to the top of Kili?
Our goal will always be to get each of our participants to the top, or as high as they need to get to gain the lessons they need. Kili is a high altitude climb and some people are affected by Altitude Sickness and can not climb further. Following our instructions, doing some mild training and being mentally prepared will increase your chances. There is no guarantee, however, that all our participants will summit. This is, in fact, one of the reasons that SYATT is such an excellent program - how many of your truly compelling goals are guaranteed to happen? Sometimes, those who do NOT make it to the top report the most significant lessons.
Having said this, Wikipedia reports that only 30% of those who climb actually reach the summit. For SYATT07, all but one made it to the first summit and everyone who decided to go on the ultimate summit (86% of our participants) made it!
Sure, we are going to build a school, but then what?
Working with the Build a School Initiative and Global Angels, we strive to create long-term projects. The building of the school will just be the beginning. We will also stock it with school supplies and then support the school in locating teachers. The school will become part of our long-term philanthropic endeavors.
Part of the plan for each school is to make it an ongoing and sustainable contribution to the local community.
"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and pretty soon every lake and river near his home will be empty unless you also teach him about the environment and his relationship to it." - Eric Edmeades
What does the package include? Are flights and transfers included?
The seminar price includes the seminar, workbook, accommodation and most of your food. You will need to arrange your own flights to Arusha, Tanzania. (Airport transport is included if you arrive on the days and times recommended.)
Do I need any injections before travelling to Tanzania?
That depends upon which innoculations you have already had. Please check this document and then check with a local travel clinic or your family doctor.
Are visas required? If so, how much? Where do you get them from?
Visa's are required for most visitors (check with your travel agent) and in most cases can be purchased upon arrival in Tanzania. (Make sure you bring some US dollars.)
Will people be sleeping out in tents?
The accommodation will be varied from huts (on the mountain) to tents and safari lodges.
Will I have to carry my own stuff up the mountain?
No, a small day pack with water and some snacks would be a good idea, but your main bags and food will be carried by porters.
